Vanessa Castro, a deputy representing the Social Christian Unity Party (PUSC), addressed the Legislative Assembly on Wednesday regarding the recent revocation of her visa to the United States.
In her remarks during a political oversight session, Castro stated, "There has been misinformation directed towards the embassy," referencing the message she received notifying her of the visa revocation on Tuesday.
The notification, delivered to Castro at 1:01 PM, indicated that new information had emerged suggesting her ineligibility for the visa.
Castro expressed her hope to clarify the situation and noted that the incident revealed who her true supporters are, highlighting the expressions of solidarity she received from various individuals.
In a related development, former President Oscar Arias Sánchez, who is a Nobel Prize laureate, also received a notification regarding the revocation of his US visa on the same day.
Both notifications cited Section 221(i) of the Immigration and Nationality Act of the United States as the basis for the visa withdrawals.
This specific provision states, "The notification of such revocation shall be communicated to the Attorney General, and such revocation shall invalidate the visa or other documentation as of the date of issuance; provided that carriers and captains shall not be penalized under subsection 1323(b) of this title for actions taken based on such visas or other documentation, unless they have received proper notification of such revocation prior to the embarkation of the alien."
In Castro's case, the communication further stipulated that she must reapply for a new visa if she wishes to travel to the United States in the future.
Throughout her address, Castro acknowledged the support she received from many individuals in light of the visa withdrawal, insisting that the discussions surrounding these issues are an attempt to distract lawmakers from their responsibilities.
She emphasized the urgency of focusing on pressing matters facing the country, such as the current challenges in the childcare network, which affect women's employability.
"We, as deputies, must concentrate and understand that we are just days away from departing this Assembly," Castro concluded.
