In a commanding performance, Costa Rica's U-17 Women's National Team secures a significant win in the CONCACAF Championship.
The Costa Rican U-17 Women's National Team commenced its campaign in the CONCACAF Championship with an emphatic 8-0 victory over Haiti, held at the High-Performance Center of the Mexican Football Federation in Toluca, Mexico.
This tournament serves as the qualifying event for the FIFA Women's U-17 World Cup scheduled for October 2025 in Morocco.
The match showcased
Costa Rica's dominance, with midfielder Lucía Paniagua emerging as the standout performer by scoring three goals within the first half.
Paniagua, a player for Sporting FC, opened her scoring account in the 26th minute, following a well-placed assist from teammate Emma Azofeifa.
Earlier, Verónica Solano had opened the scoring for
Costa Rica in the 18th minute, slotting the ball home after receiving a cross from the right flank.
Paniagua extended the lead to 3-0 in the 38th minute with a strike from the left side of the area, which was not effectively dealt with by the Haitian goalkeeper.
Just before halftime, in the 45th minute, Fabiana Alfaro struck a powerful shot from distance to increase the scoreline, followed by Paniagua's second goal, which came just a minute later, as she expertly placed the ball past the advancing goalkeeper.
Haiti attempted to regroup in the second half, making tactical changes to mitigate further scoring.
However, the onslaught continued as Raquel Recio headed in the sixth goal for
Costa Rica in the 60th minute.
A corner kick resulted in the seventh goal, with Paniagua assisting Nubia Medina, who scored with her right foot.
Alisha Lindo capped off the scoring in the 83rd minute with a left-footed shot from the edge of the area.
Despite the deluge of goals, Haitian goalkeeper Kalea Tranchant managed to prevent additional goals, demonstrating resilience throughout the match.
Under the guidance of coach Édgar Rodríguez, the team aims for a return to the U-17 Women's World Cup, having last participated in 2014 when
Costa Rica hosted the tournament.
In this competition, a total of 12 teams are divided into three groups.
Costa Rica is in Group A alongside Mexico, Haiti, and Bermuda.
The top two teams from each group, along with the best third-placed team, will secure a spot in the World Cup.
Costa Rica is seeking to qualify for its third U-17 Women’s World Cup, with their next match scheduled for Wednesday against the hosts, Mexico.
