Freddy Campos, president of Club Sport Uruguay, reveals threats following his denunciations of match-fixing in Costa Rica's Segunda División.
Freddy Campos, the president of Club Sport Uruguay, has publicly discussed receiving death threats related to his denunciations of alleged match-fixing activities in
Costa Rica's Segunda División. Campos expressed concern over a long-standing problem within the league, advocating for an extensive investigation into the issue.
Approximately five years ago, during a training session in Puerto Viejo de Sarapiquí, players approached Campos informing him that they had been offered financial incentives to lose a match against Puerto Golfito.
This conversation took place early in the morning, prompting Campos to return to San José to address the matter with the players and report it to the Costa Rican Football Federation (Fedefútbol) and the Liga de Ascenso.
Following his actions to halt the alleged match-fixing, Campos received a threatening phone call, warning him that he would face severe consequences if he continued to pursue the matter.
Campos noted that representatives from the federation were already aware of the situation and had organized a meeting involving teams from both the first and second divisions to address the recurring issue of match-fixing, which he claims has persisted for years.
Stating that the integrity of the Liga de Ascenso is under threat from a few individuals, Campos emphasized the dedication of many honest teams within the division.
In light of these developments, Campos has called for an extraordinary assembly of the Liga de Ascenso’s presidents to seek comprehensive intervention in the matter.
He expressed his concerns about the wider implications of match-fixing on the ability of clubs to secure sponsorships and the public perception of the league.
Sergio Hidalgo, president of the Liga de Ascenso, announced that an assembly will be held in two weeks to discuss various issues, including the ongoing concerns of match-fixing.
Meanwhile, another controversy is brewing as the Guanacasteca football club has raised serious accusations against the Fedefútbol after the temporary suspension of their license was reaffirmed by UNAFUT.
The club alleges that the federation is acting with malintent due to political motivations unrelated to sporting merits.
Guanacasteca expressed dissatisfaction with the ongoing handling of their case, accusing the federation of failing to resolve their appeal to restore their license submitted a month prior.
They criticized the recent communiqué from UNAFUT regarding the provisional suspension of their affiliation and stressed the need for transparency and objectivity from Fedefútbol officials.
The club has vowed to pursue all necessary legal avenues to defend its rights and the interests of its supporters against what they consider unjust treatment.
