The former Costa Rican goalkeeper addresses the decline of the National Stadium, attributing the issue to political neglect.
Erick Lonis, a former goalkeeper for the Costa Rican national team and current sports commentator, has openly criticized Mary Munive, former Minister of Sports, regarding the deteriorating condition of the National Stadium.
Recent reports have highlighted issues concerning the stadium's facilities, including its running track, lighting, and grass quality, which Lonis attributes to a lack of political support.
In an interview with Tigo Sports, Lonis discussed his experiences as a member of the National Stadium Administrative Board.
He remarked on the operational state of the stadium at the time Munive took office, stating that it was functioning effectively and yielding profits.
According to Lonis, the stadium contributed financially to several local institutions, including the National Theatre and the Municipality of San Jose.
He noted that there had been requests made for the installation of LED lighting to enhance the stadium's illumination.
Lonis emphasized the importance of adapting to rapidly evolving technology, stating that the existing lighting systems were becoming outdated.
He mentioned that different standards applied in China compared with those in
Costa Rica, and he believed there were viable solutions to improve stadium facilities, which had been proposed during his tenure.
Lonis stressed the necessity of unified support from stakeholders to ensure the stadium's optimal functioning.
Attempts to reach Munive for comment at the close of the day's reporting were unsuccessful.
