A traffic operation in Puntarenas leads to the seizure of 52 motorcycles and substantial fines for traffic violations.
A significant traffic operation conducted on Sunday in Puntarenas resulted in the confiscation of 52 motorcycles, withdrawal of 33 license plates, and the issuance of over 300 citations for violations of the Traffic Law.
The operation was initiated in response to alerts received through social media and complaints from citizens regarding a massive gathering of motorcyclists organizing an annual tour to Puntarenas.
Martín Sánchez, the deputy director of traffic, reported that many of the motorcyclists were performing stunts on the roads, endangering their lives and those of other drivers.
The operation was supported by the Fuerza Pública,
Costa Rica's national police force, and identified motorcyclists without valid driving licenses and vehicles with altered identification data.
Social media users also reported incidents of toll evasion and fuel theft at gas stations along Route 27. Videos circulated online showed hundreds of motorcyclists traveling in groups from various parts of the country, including using ferries that transport passengers from the peninsular region to Puntarenas.
Under Costa Rican Traffic Law, the fine for engaging in activities such as riding on one wheel or other actions that jeopardize safety is set at ¢122,867.
This same amount is applicable for drivers caught without a license.
Additionally, reckless driving, which includes speeding or driving under the influence of alcohol, incurs a penalty of ¢363,639.
Motorists who had their motorcycles seized or license plates withdrawn must pay all fines to retrieve their vehicles, as well as fees for the towing and custody of their motorcycles while they are held at the COSEVI impound lots.
