San José Police Conduct Raids in Case of DJ and Innocent Bystander Shootings

Judicial authorities apprehend a suspect in the fatal shooting at Cahuita Town bar that left two dead and several injured.
On the morning of Wednesday, October 9, 2024, agents from the Judicial Police conducted raids in the Bajo Los Ledezma neighborhood of La Uruca, San José, as part of the investigation into the shooting deaths of Jerson Brown Blackwood, known as DJ Pelotas, and 33-year-old María José Castro Miranda, an innocent bystander.

The incident occurred on September 8, 2024.

The operations, executed by the Tactical Response Special Service (SERT) of the Judicial Investigation Agency (OIJ), began at 6 a.m. and led to the arrest of a 21-year-old male suspect identified by the surname Meza, believed to be involved in the crime.

Authorities had previously identified three suspects in connection with the shooting; Meza was the last to be apprehended.

Another alleged accomplice had already been arrested, while a third suspect is reported to be deceased.

The shooting took place at the Cahuita Town bar and restaurant, located in the Luján neighborhood of San José's Cathedral district.

Investigations indicate that three individuals wearing motorcycle helmets entered the establishment and opened fire on Jerson Brown Blackwood, who was the intended target and died at the scene.

María José Castro Miranda was also struck by the gunfire while dining at the bar and succumbed to her injuries.

Additionally, four other patrons sustained injuries during the incident: a 38-year-old male identified as Montoya; a 53-year-old female known as Golden; and two 36-year-old males with the surname Castro.

Authorities have collected over 100 ballistic evidence items at the crime scene.

Jerson Brown Blackwood, who hailed from Limón but resided in Goicoechea, had been married twice and is the father of three children aged 28, 24, and 11. He was noted to have connections to local football through his brother Keyner Brown, a player for Club Sport Herediano.

María José Castro Miranda, on the other hand, was a mother to two young daughters aged 12 and 4.

An anonymous statement from the Cahuita Town administrator suggested that Blackwood was involved in private security, speculating that the shooting might be related to this profession.

The administrator further indicated that Blackwood served as the head of security at the El Pueblo shopping center and offered safety services at various bars and restaurants.

At the time of the incident, he was performing music at a birthday celebration but reportedly did not regularly work at Cahuita Town.

This event has raised concerns regarding safety in local establishments and has sparked discussions in the community regarding potential motives behind the violent act.
