Saprissa Signs Spanish Striker Sabin Merino Amid High Expectations

The new recruit aims to bolster the team's offensive capabilities as they seek to regain their championship status.
Deportivo Saprissa has announced the signing of Spanish forward Sabin Merino as a key addition to their offensive lineup.

Upon his arrival in Costa Rica, Merino expressed his ambition to score extensively during his time with the club.

Sergio Gila, the club's sporting director and the architect of Merino's recruitment, shared his optimism regarding the player's potential.

In a previous statement, Gila highlighted Merino's impressive track record, stating, “Sabin has scored goals in the first division and has played in many matches in the Europa League.

With all due respect, if he were regularly playing in the first division, he would not be coming to Costa Rica.”

As of now, the club awaits the finalization of Merino's work permit to enable his participation in upcoming matches.

Coach José Giacone confirmed the forward's readiness to contribute, stating, “He is ready.”

Saprissa is currently in need of a prolific scorer, as their two existing forwards, Ariel Rodríguez and Orlando Sinclair, have collectively scored only one goal this season.

Merino's performance is anticipated to address this pressing requirement.

In response to inquiries regarding his scoring capabilities, Merino stated, “I must be judged on what I do on the pitch.

It will become evident if I am a goal scorer or not.” He refrained from setting specific scoring targets, emphasizing his commitment to the team's success, “What is most important is that Saprissa becomes champion, and if I can contribute by scoring many goals, that would be even better.”

Saprissa is also keenly awaiting the debut of Nicolás Delgadillo, who, along with Merino, has faced delays due to financial obligations the club had with the Caja and the Ministry of Finance.

Following recent payments, the team is now up to date on its financial responsibilities and is hopeful of securing work permits for both players in time for their next match, a crucial clash scheduled for Sunday at 11 a.m. at the Estadio Ricardo Saprissa.
