Tragic Deaths of Two Children in Costa Rica Highlight Safety Concerns

An 11-year-old boy and a 3-year-old girl lost their lives in separate incidents in Costa Rica, drawing attention to safety and risk factors in the community.
On April 2, 2025, tragedy struck in Cariari, Costa Rica, when 11-year-old Greivin Daniel Vásquez López, known as Danielito, was killed after being struck by a truck while riding on a motorcycle with his father, Greivin Vásquez.

The incident occurred around 5 p.m. as the pair stopped near the entrance to Campo 3 in Cariari.

Reports indicate that the motorcycle was side-swiped by a truck, resulting in both father and son being thrown from the vehicle.

Danielito fell onto the road and was subsequently run over by the same truck.

The truck driver, identified as Jiménez, 35, fled the scene, but another driver pursued him and managed to apprehend him.

Early investigations suggest that the suspect may be an adult, contrary to some unverified claims indicating he was a minor.

Danielito, a sixth-grade student excited about his upcoming graduation, was described by his father as a dedicated boy who enjoyed spending time with his family, including participating in their Jehovah's Witness activities.

The school he attended, Campo Cinco, expressed their condolences on social media, stating that the community mourns the loss of a child who brought joy and enthusiasm to those around him.

His mother, deeply affected by the loss, struggled to express her grief.

In a separate incident on the same day, a 3-year-old girl tragically lost her life while trying to cross the Pacayitas River in Pavones de Turrialba.

Initial reports indicate that the family was attempting to return home when they were swept away by the river's strong currents.

The parents reportedly attempted to rescue their daughter but were unable to do so in time.

Emergency services confirmed the death, and authorities took charge of the situation to facilitate the recovery of the child's body.

These incidents highlight ongoing concerns regarding child safety and accident prevention in Costa Rica, as communities grapple with the implications of such tragedies.

Local officials and citizens alike are prompted to reflect on the circumstances leading to these events and the need for increased awareness and safety measures for families navigating potential hazards.
