Sherlyn Alvarado, a 23-year-old from Heredia, showcases successful entrepreneurship through her ice cream business.
Sherlyn Alvarado Vargas, a 23-year-old entrepreneur from
Mercedes Norte in Heredia,
Costa Rica, has gained attention for her lucrative ice cream venture.
Alvarado reports that on a good day, she can earn up to ₡120,000, significantly more than many office workers, all while maintaining a flexible schedule without traditional supervision.
However, the success of her business involves considerable effort and dedication.
Alvarado's entrepreneurial spirit began at an early age, inspired by her father's work ethic as a vendor.
At the age of seven, she would sell her father's products at school to earn some money for herself.
"I would ask my dad for the mango ‘apretados’ he was selling and sell them at school to have some cash," she shared.
Throughout her youth, Alvarado engaged in various entrepreneurial endeavors, including selling sugarcane juice, desserts, and providing massage services while living at the beach.
She started her ice cream business in November 2021 after leaving her job at a restaurant, recognizing a more profitable opportunity in her own venture.
"I lived in Cariari de Limón for three months, where it’s much hotter, and my sales were excellent," she stated.
In just over two years, Alvarado has built a reputation in Heredia for her ice creams and even opened a store near a clinic.
However, she had to close this location due to low foot traffic but remains optimistic about finding a better site in the future to expand her offerings.
Alvarado revealed that she is not solely responsible for ice cream production; her sister also assists in making the ‘apretados’.
"Making the ice creams is a complete job.
It takes me about six hours to make them, and selling them takes another four hours," she explained.
While some days yield high sales, others can be challenging.
Alvarado noted that weather conditions significantly affect her business.
"Some days, I can be ready to go by 10 AM, but if it rains, I might have to wait one or two hours, which can complicate things.
In the summer, the heat is a boon for sales," she added.
Alvarado actively shares her daily experiences on TikTok, where her audience is often surprised by her earnings, which can surpass those of traditional office jobs.
She clarified that while she can earn substantial amounts, her profit margins are affected by expenses, estimating that about 50-60% of her earnings cover her investment costs.
Her business, named Laishers, boasts around 20 flavors, with popular choices including Oreo and strawberry.
The price for the ‘apretados’ ranges between ₡1,000 and ₡1,500, with additional options that include alcoholic versions and larger packages.
Alvarado is in the process of expanding her distribution points, including plans for locations in San José.
In the future, she dreams of continuing to grow her business and pursuing studies in administration to enhance her business skills.
Alvarado serves as an example of youthful determination and resilience, encouraging aspiring entrepreneurs to surround themselves with positive influences and proactively seek knowledge to achieve their goals.
