Alexander Vargas Departs from Club Sport Herediano Amid Emotional Farewell
The former head coach reflects on his departure and the impact on his family following the announcement.
On April 7, 2025, Alexander Vargas was officially dismissed as the head coach of Club Sport Herediano, an event that has reportedly caused emotional turmoil for both him and his family.
Vargas received the notification from Gustavo Pérez on Sunday evening during a brief conversation lasting less than a minute.
In the wake of his departure, Vargas conveyed to his wife, Alicia, and his two children, Lorenzo, aged 14, and Lucía, aged 10, the abrupt nature of the news.
"When unexpected situations arise, it causes pain.
My wife and children suffer, and seeing them cry impacts my strength, but I had to be strong for them," Vargas remarked, revealing the emotional strain of the situation.
Despite feeling devastated, Vargas stated, "I am broken inside, but I am holding it together; it hurts a lot, but this is the crucible that we coaches face." He indicated that while he has numerous active communication channels with friends, players, and family, he would be facing the situation throughout the day.
Vargas's professionalism is underscored by the support he has received from players and his belief that he performed honestly until the end of his tenure.
He expressed, "If I had left poorly, the players would not be supporting me; I have messages from some of them.
I am hurt, but I am also at peace because I was honest with my work."
Following his dismissal, Vargas publicly expressed disagreement with comments made by Aquil Alí, who justified the decision based on the team's performance against direct rivals.
Alí stated, "We want to ensure the leadership position; he had several opportunities to secure first place but let them slip away."
Vargas countered these remarks, stating, "I disagree with what he said, as he had three wins and three losses during the semi-final and final last season, similar to my record in direct encounters." He noted that Herediano's matches against Alajuelense, Saprissa, and Cartaginés were closely contested.
He voiced concerns that a lack of communicated reasons for his dismissal suggested a lack of trust in his abilities.
"That hurts; they only want to win, nothing else," Vargas stated.
Despite the circumstances, he expressed a desire for Herediano to achieve national championship success, acknowledging the effort of the players and coaching staff.
"I know what I contributed, and I hope Herediano becomes champions, for the players, for the work they put in, and for my coaching staff.
I am not bitter; I do not wish ill on anyone; such negativity comes back to oneself," he added.
When asked about a potential future with Herediano, Vargas responded thoughtfully, "I can never say no.
One does not know what stage will come next; I do not close the door on any team." He also indicated that he considers all opportunities that come his way.
Under Vargas's management, Herediano was in second place in the league standings, just one point behind Puntarenas, indicating that the team still has prospects for the season ahead.
