A woman reportedly escaped from captivity after being threatened with death and sexual assault by her partner.
On November 6, 2024, in a cabin located in Buenos Aires, Puntarenas, a woman was reportedly subjected to severe domestic violence, including sexual assault and violent death threats, allegedly at the hands of her partner.
The case has been officially documented, and preventive detention measures have been extended for the accused by judicial authorities.
According to the judicial authorities, a man identified by the surname López allegedly violated the woman and subsequently bound her hands, wrapping her in a sheet.
Once she was immobilized, he threatened to set her on fire and burn her alive, though the accusation indicates that he did not follow through on this threat.
The woman managed to free her hands, escape her confinement, and flee the premises.
Shortly after the reported incident, the suspect was apprehended by law enforcement officials at a bus stop in the area.
On November 8, it was revealed that the Criminal Court of Buenos Aires ordered three months of preventive detention for López.
He faces multiple charges, including rape, threats, and offenses against the dignity of his partner.
On March 28, the judiciary announced that the preventive detention measure was extended, requiring the accused to remain in custody for an additional two months.
Between January 1 and October 1 of the same year, there were an average of 110 daily reports filed under the Law Against Violence towards Women, according to data from the Public Prosecutor's Office.
In total, 30,171 reports were recorded during this period.
On November 25, a Spanish newspaper highlighted
Costa Rica as a "paradise of impunity" for sexual aggressors, noting that many perpetrators either go free or are not reported at all.
The report emphasized that the most significant crisis of insecurity for women is concentrated in remote and tourist areas of the country.
