A suspect linked to the notorious criminal group 'Los Machetes' has been detained following a police operation in San Carlos.
In a significant law enforcement operation, agents from the Organismo de Investigación Judicial (OIJ) of
Costa Rica, supported by the Fuerza Pública and local police, arrested a suspect early Thursday morning in Barrio El Jardín. The individual, identified as 26-year-old Sánchez, is under investigation for alleged involvement with a criminal gang known as 'Los Machetes,' which is suspected of committing a series of street robberies.
The operation took place at approximately 5 a.m. in a residence located 300 meters east and 100 meters north of the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MAG).
During the raid, Sánchez was taken into custody.
He is being investigated for his presumed participation in multiple robberies affecting individuals in public areas.
Authorities have linked Sánchez to at least five criminal cases, including three incidents that occurred in February and one in March of this year.
The most recent robbery took place on Wednesday night in Aguas Zarcas de San Carlos, where a taxi driver was reportedly targeted by Sánchez and accomplices who stole cash, jewelry, mobile phones, and bicycles from their victims.
Two other alleged members of 'Los Machetes' were apprehended the previous week.
The San Carlos Criminal Court has ordered three months of preventive detention for these individuals while the investigation progresses.
The OIJ has stated that it will continue its inquiries into the activities of this criminal group and is working to determine whether additional suspects are involved in the series of robberies.
