OIJ conducts operation leading to the arrest of a suspect and the confiscation of illegal firearms and narcotics.
On Thursday morning, agents from the Organismo de Investigación Judicial (OIJ) in Grecia,
Costa Rica, conducted a raid at a residence, resulting in the discovery of assault rifles and several handguns.
A 52-year-old man, identified by the last names Martínez Salas, was arrested under suspicion of violating the Law on Psychotropic Substances.
The operation was initiated based on intelligence received earlier in the month, suggesting that Martínez Salas was allegedly involved in the sale of drugs, specifically operating from his home and a nearby bar.
The raid took place at a location in INVU 03, Grecia de Alajuela, and was executed under the direction of the San Ramón Narcotics Prosecutor's Office.
During the search, agents uncovered various drug substances, including apparent crack cocaine, marijuana, and cocaine, alongside a significant cache of firearms.
The confiscated items included two assault rifles: an AK-47 and an AR-15, as well as seven revolvers and corresponding ammunition.
Additionally, cash suspected to be derived from drug sales was also seized.
The Public Prosecutor’s Office announced that the Narcotics Unit of Grecia plans to seek precautionary measures against Martínez Salas for violations related to firearm possession, storage, and the sale of drugs.
A hearing to determine his legal status will be scheduled at the local Criminal Court.
The possession of assault rifles by civilians is prohibited under Costa Rican law.
The investigation remains ongoing under case number 25-000269-0075-PE.
