The PLN's Assembly to decide on a proposed coalition strategy for the 2026 Presidential Elections
The Partido Liberación Nacional (PLN) of
Costa Rica is set to make a significant decision regarding its participation in potential electoral coalitions or alliances with other political groups for the upcoming 2026 presidential elections.
This decision will be deliberated during the party's National Assembly scheduled for January 25th.
The party’s Secretary General, Miguel Guillén, clarified in a statement that the drafting of the agreement is ongoing, particularly its legal implications and scope.
Initially, the focus is on forming a coalition for the second round of elections.
Guillén emphasized that the party is considering alliances as a strategic move to gather forces for enhancing the country’s democratic well-being.
On January 19th, the Unidad Social Cristiana (PUSC) took a step towards similar collaborative initiatives.
The party amended its Internal Electoral Regulations to include provisions for forming such alliances.
Meanwhile, a collective known as Foro Agenda por
Costa Rica, which includes members of PLN, PUSC, and the Frente Amplio (FA), alongside figures from academia and the justice sector, is working towards establishing an electoral alliance for the 2026 elections.
The Assembly on January 25th will also feature votes on a reform concerning the election of sector representatives and formal consideration of presidential candidacies.
Additionally, various vacant positions within the party’s structure will be filled, including roles in the National Prosecutor’s Office, the Deputy General Secretariat, and several municipal and ethical committees.
