Deportivo Saprissa's Paulo Wanchope Addresses Player Substitution Controversy

Coach clarifies situation regarding Marvin Loría's early exit during match against Herediano
In a tense encounter during the 15th match of the Clausura league between Deportivo Saprissa and Club Sport Herediano on March 30, 2025, coach Paulo César Wanchope addressed concerns regarding a reported argument with player Marvin Loría. The midfielder sustained an injury early in the match, exiting the game at the 26th minute, which prompted the substitution of Deyver Vega.

In the post-match press conference, Wanchope was questioned about the nature of his interaction with Loría upon the substitution.

He clarified, "It was not a discussion; it was something normal.

One does not want to make a change so quickly during such tense matches.

We gave it the necessary time; I felt he could continue, but as the minutes passed, it became apparent that he was not at 100 percent."

Wanchope confirmed that Loría experienced discomfort leading to the decision to replace him.

Furthermore, he addressed criticism regarding the team's offensive performance, noting a stark contrast in opportunities created compared to their previous match.

"In our last game, we had 22 shots and 14 chances on goal, but today we only recorded three shots, one of which resulted in a goal.

This is how it goes; we need to be effective and understand the opponent we faced today," he stated.

He acknowledged the quality of the Herediano team, the reigning champions, emphasizing the need for respect in such high-stakes matches.

"I would have liked to control the game for the full 90 minutes and recreate the 22 chances we had in the last match, but we were up against a strong team with experienced players.

These types of matches unfold this way," said Wanchope.

Additionally, Wanchope reflected on the overall performance of his team, expressing a mix of intensity and positivity regarding their efforts on the field.

"The match was very good, but we need to improve further.

The players worked hard, and I was very pleased with that," he commented.

Regarding the exclusion of some key players from the lineup, including Orlando Sinclair and Ryan Bolaños, Wanchope defended his decision-making process.

"I have a broad and important roster, and I mentioned from the beginning that I believe I have the right to evaluate, to rotate players, and to find the best eleven for every match.

Making those decisions is complex; it is not easy to inform a player, especially one who participated in the previous match, that they will not be included.

However, it is my responsibility as a coach to seek what is best for the team," he concluded.
