Bukele's upcoming visit follows the deportation of Venezuelans by the US to El Salvador.
The President of El Salvador, Nayib Bukele, is scheduled to meet with U.S. President
Donald Trump in April, according to an announcement from the Salvadoran presidency.
This meeting will take place at the White House, although specific dates have not yet been disclosed.
Bukele's visit comes shortly after the recent deportation of over 200 Venezuelans to El Salvador, which occurred on March 16. These individuals have been held in a maximum-security prison in El Salvador.
The U.S. government claims that these Venezuelans are members of the Tren de Aragua, a criminal gang.
However, families of the deported individuals and representatives from Caracas assert that they are merely undocumented migrants.
The deported Venezuelans are currently being held at the Mega Prison for Terrorism Confinement (CECOT).
On the eve of this announcement, U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem visited the prison during a tour of several Latin American countries.
This visit emphasizes the United States' ongoing efforts to manage immigration and deportation policies in relation to Central American nations.
Bukele shared a message on social media regarding the meeting, relaying details from a U.S. journalist who first reported on the intended encounter.
