Former Panamanian President Ricardo Martinelli Set to Travel to Nicaragua Despite Arrest Warrant

Former Panamanian President Ricardo Martinelli Set to Travel to Nicaragua Despite Arrest Warrant

Ricardo Martinelli leaves Nicaraguan embassy to evade prison sentence amid ongoing legal challenges.
Former Panamanian President Ricardo Martinelli, 73, is preparing to leave the Nicaraguan embassy in Panama City on Monday, heading to Managua, Nicaragua, to evade an ongoing prison sentence for money laundering.

This move comes despite an active Interpol arrest warrant issued against him.

Jaime Fernández, Director of the Panamanian Police, confirmed that while the police have received notification of the Interpol alert, it will not impede Martinelli's journey due to an official safe-conduct granted by the Panamanian government.

This safe-conduct was issued primarily on the grounds of 'humanitarian reasons,' allowing Martinelli to address health problems and continue his legal defense outside of prison.

The director stated that the operation to ensure Martinelli's security during his transfer to the airport will commence early on Monday morning.

Martinelli has been residing in the Nicaraguan embassy since February 7, 2024, after a local court ruled for his arrest to serve nearly 11 years in prison following his conviction for money laundering in 2023. His conviction was upheld by a higher court on February 2, 2024, a mere five days prior to his asylum claim.

In addition to his current legal troubles, Martinelli is also facing a trial set to commence in November concerning his alleged involvement in the bribery scandal tied to the Brazilian construction firm Odebrecht.

The Nicaraguan government, led by President Daniel Ortega and First Lady Rosario Murillo, has a history of providing refuge to individuals with outstanding legal cases in their home countries, including former Salvadoran presidents implicated in corruption allegations.

The unfolding situation underscores continuing tensions in Central American politics and the implications of asylum amidst significant legal controversies.
