The general manager of Deportivo Saprissa speaks out on speculation regarding his departure and outlines challenges faced by the club.
Gustavo Chinchilla, the general manager of Deportivo Saprissa, addressed rumors regarding his potential resignation during a press conference held on March 28, 2025. The event coincided with the announcement of a new futsal team for the club.
Chinchilla, who has been with Saprissa for five years as of March 9, remarked on the difficulties he has faced since joining the organization shortly after the onset of the
COVID-19 pandemic in
Costa Rica.
He acknowledged the exhausting nature of his role and expressed his commitment to the club despite the challenges.
"I entered an industry that I did not know, and the past five years have been very demanding," Chinchilla stated.
He indicated that the club has experienced significant hurdles over the years, including the implementation of a financial recovery plan for its stadium and the impact of reduced fan attendance during the pandemic.
In his remarks, Chinchilla described the current financial climate as particularly tough, stating, "The January slope has been very difficult for us.
We started with financial challenges, then faced additional administrative issues, and the results on the field have not met expectations."
He asserted that the scrutiny from both the board of directors and the passionate fanbase of Saprissa, identified as the most successful team in
Costa Rica, remains intense.
Chinchilla emphasized that he has no immediate plans to leave the club, despite the pressure.
The discourse around Chinchilla's management comes against a backdrop of recent underperformance from the team, which has a historically high salary budget but has struggled to achieve desired results on the pitch.
