New Developments in the Disappearance of Mauricio Chavarría Velásquez

The family of the missing 32-year-old and law enforcement authorities are following new leads nearly two weeks after his vanishing on March 20.
Family members of Mauricio Chavarría Velásquez, a 32-year-old man who has been missing since March 20, are intensifying their search efforts as new leads emerge regarding his disappearance.

Chavarría, who resides in San Ramón de Alajuela and owns a BMW, was last known to have posted an advertisement for the sale of his vehicle, which has sparked speculation that he may have been harmed during a potential transaction.

Recent investigations by the Organismo de Investigación Judicial (OIJ) have revealed that Chavarría's last cell phone connection was traced to Boca de Barranca, near Caldera in the Puntarenas region.

Additionally, cameras in Esparza recorded his vehicle, though authorities have yet to confirm who was driving at that time.

It remains unclear if this trace, captured on March 20, corresponds to the time he was last seen alive.

Eugenia Bustamante, the aunt of Chavarría, reported that the family provided crucial information to the OIJ regarding Chavarría’s activities on the day of his disappearance.

Notably, he completed a trip using a private transportation platform at approximately 6:30 p.m. within his residential canton.

The female passenger involved in the trip, who contacted the family via social media, confirmed the details of the ride and stated she has already given a statement to the authorities.

The passenger alleged that Chavarría spoke about where he was from and expressed caution regarding his work, which raised alarms for his family about the nature of the circumstances surrounding his disappearance.

In a public statement, the family shared that they had not received any recent updates from law enforcement regarding Chavarría's whereabouts despite having supplied all known data.

They stated that authorities have yet to establish contact with the transportation platform used by Chavarría.

Since last week, family and friends have been conducting searches throughout the Occidente region, focusing on less populated areas such as Naranjo, Sarchí, Palmares, and San Ramón, and extending their search efforts to Puntarenas and San Carlos.

Their activities have included inspecting vacant properties, putting up posters, and engaging with local residents.

Familial representatives have indicated that the emotional toll of the search has been heavy, and while they have had to return to work, they continue their outreach through social media in hopes of finding Chavarría or his vehicle elsewhere.

Mauricio Chavarría's last known movements included the social media advertisement to sell his BMW on March 9, followed by the trip on March 20. The owner of the apartment where Chavarría lived noted that he observed Chavarría's vehicle was not parked on the night of March 20. His absence from work the following day prompted colleagues to attempt to contact him, resulting in the police report being filed on March 22.

Authorities have been granted access to Chavarría's apartment and have interviewed coworkers; however, no significant leads or traces of his location have been uncovered thus far.

Family members expressed concerns regarding the urgency of the situation, emphasizing that the passage of time without news is alarming.
