New York Yankees Honor Brett Gardner's Son Following Sudden Death in Costa Rica

Miller Gardner, 14, was remembered by the Yankees with a moment of silence before their opening game after his tragic passing during a family vacation.
The New York Yankees held a memorial tribute for Miller Gardner, the son of former player Brett Gardner, prior to their first game of the Major League Baseball season following his sudden death in Costa Rica.

Miller, aged 14, was found deceased in his hotel room last week while vacationing with his family.

The family trip included Brett Gardner, who previously played for the Yankees.

Before the match against the Milwaukee Brewers, the team honored Miller with a minute of silence.

The Yankees organization characterized the young boy as having 'spark in his eyes, an outgoing personality, and a loving spirit.'

Costa Rican authorities have preliminarily ruled out asphyxiation due to food poisoning as a cause of death, as there were no obstructions found in the airways during initial examinations.

The investigation is now focused on determining whether the young boy had an allergic reaction to any medication he received before his death.

The Judicial Investigation Agency (OIJ) has sent samples for three types of analyses: histology, toxicology, and neuropathology.

These tests will be conducted at the forensic laboratories of the OIJ.

Collaboration has also been requested from the Costa Rican Institute of Research and Teaching in Nutrition and Health (INCIENSA) under the Ministry of Health.

OIJ has indicated that results from these analyses could take between two to three months to be completed, due to the high workload on the forensic laboratories amidst an increase in homicides in the country.

The hotel where the Gardner family was staying issued a statement confirming that the family did not dine in any of its restaurants on the night of the incident.

Brett Gardner made his Major League debut with the Yankees in 2008 and was part of the team that won the World Series in 2009. He retired in 2021 after spending his entire career with the New York franchise.
