Rodolfo Villalobos Addresses Alajuelense's Pursuit of FIFA Club World Cup Entry

Rodolfo Villalobos Addresses Alajuelense's Pursuit of FIFA Club World Cup Entry

Former Fedefútbol President Discusses Legal Appeals and Controversial Statements from Concacaf Leadership
Rodolfo Villalobos, the former president of the Costa Rican Football Federation (Fedefútbol) and current member of FIFA's and Concacaf's councils, has finally spoken on the Liga Deportiva Alajuelense's ongoing legal battle concerning their right to participate in the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup.

Villalobos confirmed in a recent interview with Radio Columbia's program Encuentro Deportivo that he has maintained open communication with the club’s management regarding the complex legal matters involved.

"I have spoken clearly to them; our communication has been transparent and respectful.

They know I am Costa Rican and want the best for Costa Rican football," stated Villalobos, in response to criticisms regarding his previous silence on the matter.

Alajuelense is currently challenging FIFA’s decision, as they claim their position in the FIFA ranking grants them merit to qualify for the tournament.

The club issued a request to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (TAS) after feeling their complaints about potential violations of FIFA's regulations concerning club ownership and the participation rights of different teams, notably Club León and Pachuca, were neglected.

In recent developments, Alajuelense expressed outrage at comments made by the president of Concacaf, Víctor Montagliani, during the final of the Nations League, where he expressed support for Club León’s participation in the World Cup.

Villalobos defended Montagliani, stating that the issue is strictly legal and should not be influenced by the Concacaf or FIFA councils.

He reiterated that decisions about the situation are solely in the hands of external legal entities like the TAS.

Simultaneously, Villalobos faced backlash from some followers who accused him of being disloyal to his country, which he addressed, asserting that his intentions have always been to serve and support all football associations equally.

Tension escalated when the Liga released a statement highlighting the potential bias in Montagliani's remarks, which they believe contradicts the principles of neutrality expected from a Concacaf leadership.

Club representative León Weinstok noted the need for impartiality and clarity from the confederation’s officials, stating that recent statements could lead to further disputes within the governing bodies.

Alajuelense is scheduled to present its case to the TAS in Madrid on April 23, where representatives from FIFA, Concacaf, Club León, and Pachuca are also expected to attend.

This meeting is crucial for Alajuelense as they aim to reinforce their argument that they deserve a place in the World Cup based on their sporting merits and existing regulations.

Meanwhile, Alajuelense continues to focus on their domestic league performance, competing against San Carlos later today, as they aim for a favorable position in the current tournament, tracking closely behind leaders Puntarenas FC and Herediano.
