Saprissa Expands into Futsal with New Competitive Team

The Costa Rican sports club announces its entry into futsal, emphasizing sustainability and community engagement.
In a significant development for Costa Rican sports, Club Sportivo Saprissa, one of the country's most recognized football clubs, has announced its expansion into the sport of futsal.

This move marks the organization's return to competitive sports beyond traditional football, as it previously had involvement in basketball.

The new futsal team will compete under the name SAPRISSA FUTSAL and will host its matches at the Polideportivo de San Francisco de Dos Ríos.

Marco Carvajal, a seasoned coach and former player with international experience, will lead the team.

He brings over 25 years of experience in sports to this new endeavor, expressing enthusiasm about engaging with the passionate fanbase of Saprissa.

Carvajal stated, "I am very happy because we are reaching out to the most demanding fans in the country.

As the name of this team suggests, we will fight for everything."

Gustavo Chinchilla, the club's manager, highlighted the importance of this initiative within the broader context of Saprissa's brand growth.

He noted, "This is an effort to continue growing the Saprissista footprint.

We are over one and a half million supporters of this team.

We want this project to grow, and Saprissa will help promote the discipline along with Marco and his entire team."

Chinchilla emphasized that the SAPRISSA FUTSAL team is intended to be self-sustaining, although it will receive institutional support in securing commercial partnerships.

An initial strategy includes offering current sponsors the opportunity to feature their brands on the futsal team's uniforms.

In addition, Carvajal mentioned plans to integrate Saprissa Academies into the futsal program.

He noted that this integration will be approached thoughtfully and with proper planning to ensure success.

Currently, the Saprissa futsal team is participating in the Copa Torneo and is set to enter the Liga Premier 2025, with the latter commencing in May.
