Saprissa Faces Critical Match Against Santos as Playoff Positions Tighten

Desperate for points, Saprissa must secure a win against Santos to maintain playoff standing in the Costa Rican league.
In Guápiles, Deportivo Saprissa prepares for a critical match against Santos, needing a victory to secure their position in the playoff zone.

Currently, Saprissa has accumulated 19 points, placing them in fifth position, just two points behind Cartaginés, who recently defeated Santa Ana 0-1 to claim the fourth spot with 21 points.

As it stands, Saprissa's chances of advancing in the league hinge on winning this match; a draw would be inadequate, while a loss could jeopardize their standing considerably.

The match against Santos is set to kickoff at 8 p.m. local time and will be broadcast on Tigo Sports.

This marks the third match for Paulo César Wanchope as head coach of Saprissa.

Under his direction, the team achieved a decisive 3-0 win over San Carlos, followed by a 1-1 draw against Liberia, both played at the Estadio Ricardo Saprissa.

This encounter will be Wanchope's inaugural outing as an away coach for Saprissa, intensifying the pressure for a positive result.

Saprissa's necessity for a win is compounded by the fact that a defeat could see them slip further down the standings, especially should Cartaginés prevail against Santa Ana.

Additionally, Santos would also match Saprissa's point total with a victory, further complicating the playoff landscape.

Saprissa has faced challenges during their recent away fixtures, having suffered three consecutive defeats in previous matches — a 2-1 loss to Cartaginés, a 2-1 loss to Santa Ana, and a 2-0 defeat to Guanacasteca.

On a somewhat favorable note, Santos' home form has been less than stellar, with recent results including a 1-1 draw against Cartaginés, a goalless draw with Alajuelense, and a 2-2 draw with Herediano.

Historically, Saprissa has enjoyed success against Santos during away encounters, posting three consecutive victories.

Santos head coach Wálter Centeno holds a slight edge in the head-to-head record against Wanchope, winning two of their previous three encounters with one match ending in a draw.

For this match, Saprissa will see the return of Marvin Loria and Spanish attacker Sabin Merino, both of whom have recently overcome injuries.

Panamanian defender Fidel Escobar will also rejoin the squad after participating in CONCACAF Nations League matches.

In terms of match logistics, Santos will don their black kit, with the goalkeeper in celeste, while Saprissa will wear purple and white striped jerseys with white shorts.

The officiating team will be led by referee Adrián Chinchilla, supported by assistants Andrés Arrieta and Eder Villareal, with José Daniel Montero as the match secretary.

The VAR officials will include Carlos Salazar and Víctor Ramírez.
