Daniel Colindres, iconic player at age 40, could join Saprissa's newly formed futsal team under coach Marco Carvajal.
The Deportivo Saprissa futsal team has opened discussions around the potential inclusion of Daniel Colindres, a veteran player and symbol of the club, in its roster.
At 40 years old, Colindres is currently competing in the national football league, but he has a storied history in futsal, having risen through the ranks under the guidance of Marco Carvajal, the current coach of Saprissa Futsal.
Carvajal was instrumental in Colindres's early development at a futsal club in Alajuela before bringing him to Goicoechea, where he gained recognition that eventually led him to the national futsal team and a successful career at Deportivo Saprissa.
Despite his strong legacy with Saprissa, Colindres has not indicated an imminent retirement from professional football.
However, with the resurgence of his friendship with Carvajal and the promising opportunities at Saprissa Futsal, discussions regarding his potential involvement have emerged.
Carvajal commented on the matter, stating, "Daniel is a friend of mine and has a background in futsal.
If any players from the first division who have a history in futsal want to join us, we will consider it based on their commitment and the values we uphold, such as teamwork and dedication."
It is important to note that futsal in
Costa Rica is not a professional sport, and players do not receive financial compensation for their involvement, which may influence Colindres's decision.
Carvajal is at the helm of the futsal initiative, serving as both coach and president of the association that has a licensing agreement with Saprissa.
The team is currently participating in the Copa tournament, which has proven challenging.
Thus far, they have suffered losses against Escazú and Ciudad Colón, with scores of 2-1 and 3-2 against Chorotega.
Participation in the Copa is compulsory for qualification to the upcoming Liga Premier, scheduled to commence on May 31.
While Carvajal acknowledges that establishing a successful futsal project requires time and resources, he remains optimistic about the team's development.
He emphasizes the significance of improving their gameplay and finds the current squad's performance encouraging, despite the early setbacks.
Identifying a proficient striker and a more experienced goalkeeper remains a priority to strengthen the team further.
The coach, with a rich history as a national team player, understands the complexities involved in developing a nascent futsal squad and is committed to long-term progression, stating that successful outcomes cannot be expected immediately.
