The Frente Amplio legislator plans a defamation lawsuit against a TikTok user for distributing a manipulated video falsely depicting her in an altercation.
In a striking development highlighting the perils of misinformation in the digital age, Sofía Guillén, a legislator from
Costa Rica's Frente Amplio party, has announced her intention to sue a TikTok user identified as Pedro Estrada Estrada for defamation.
This legal action arises over a manipulated video clip that wrongly attributes to her an incident originally involving Marulin Azofeifa, a former lawmaker from a different political faction.
The disputed video went viral after being shared by several users, including those identifying as supporters of President Rodrigo Chaves.
The shared clip falsely implicated Guillén in a confrontation with traffic police, an event that occurred in March 2021 and actually involved former legislator Azofeifa.
Original footage of the incident featuring Azofeifa still exists on YouTube, with clear evidence separating Guillén from the incident.
Guillén expressed outrage at the dissemination of this misleading content, stating, "Esa no soy yo y lo saben.
Voy a presentar esa denuncia contra quienes se están prestando a difamar.
Esto no es un daño individual, es un daño a la democracia y a la participación colectiva de las personas." Her comments emphasize not just personal misrepresentation but broader democratic concerns.
In response to this digital smear, Guillén has signaled her intent to extend legal action beyond Estrada, targeting any others complicit in spreading the false narrative.
She criticized the production and dissemination of such deceptive material, characterizing it as mediocre and flagrant, considering the original video is three years old and obviously does not portray her.
Efforts to secure a comment from Estrada via TikTok have so far gone unanswered.
Meanwhile, the online circulation of the manipulated video has sparked widespread support for Guillén within the legislative assembly.
Notably, Daniela Rojas of the Partido Unidad Social Cristiana (PUSC) publicly urged government party members either to distance themselves from or actively denounce such attacks.
This incident underscores the increasing prevalance of disinformation and the challenges it represents to politicians and public figures worldwide.
As technology facilitates the rapid spread of content, unchecked misinformation poses significant threats to both individual reputations and democratic processes.
