Suspension of Train Services in Costa Rica Due to Track Construction
Train operations will be temporarily halted on select routes for infrastructure improvements.
Train services will be suspended on Thursday, March 13, and Friday, March 14, along the routes from San José to Alajuela and Heredia, as well as the return journeys.
The Instituto Costarricense de Ferrocarriles (INCOFER) announced that this interruption is due to the closure of railway tracks at Calle Blancos, Goicoechea, where a railway level crossing is under construction.
The construction activities involve the intervention at the crossing of the railway line with Route 11306, located in front of RAE Ingenieros on Calle 7. These works will take place daily from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m., from Thursday, March 13, until Sunday, March 16.
During this period, train services to Cartago, Belén, and Pavas will continue to operate as normal.
The construction efforts include the complete reconstruction of the level crossing, covering a length of nine meters.
Renovations will include the installation of new railway materials such as rails, concrete sleepers, ballast, thermite welding, leveling and footwear works, as well as the fabrication of guardrail structures, placement of concrete, and construction of asphalt approaches to the level crossing.
These upgrades are aimed at improving the intersection at the railway crossing.
These projects are part of the Programa de Emergencia para la Reconstrucción Integral y Resiliente de Infraestructura (PROERI).
The initiative is being financed by a $700 million loan from the Banco Centroamericano de Integración Económica (BCIE), which also encompasses projects for stabilizing slopes on mountain roads, bridges, educational infrastructure, and housing for individuals affected by natural disasters.
