Multiple tragic events and criminal cases raise concerns about safety and justice in Costa Rica.
On March 11, 2025, authorities confirmed the recovery of the body of 17-year-old Valeria Chavarría, who had been missing since March 8 after being swept away by strong currents at Playa Dominical in Osa.
The body was found approximately two kilometers from where she was last seen with her family.
The Red Cross, in collaboration with family members, conducted an extensive search operation which was informed by tidal patterns.
Luis Ramírez Estrada from the Red Cross stated that the body was located by family members and the Coast Guard, and subsequently delivered to authorities.
Chavarría was a high school student in the eleventh grade at Colegio del Valle in Pérez Zeledón, and her family described her as a cherished individual who was looking forward to her upcoming graduation.
In their despair, her mother and stepmother resorted to a symbolic gesture, launching a pillow into the sea, hoping for a spiritual return of her body.
In another serious incident, an investigation is underway regarding the kidnapping and murder of Guido Andrés Alpízar Valverde.
The primary suspect is a 30-year-old dentist, Restrepo Allón, along with four other men.
The group allegedly abducted Alpízar on August 24, 2022, in San José, before disappearing with him.
As of March 11, 2025, Alpízar remains missing.
The investigation revealed that a close acquaintance of Alpízar lured him into a vehicle where he was supposedly assaulted.
The trial for the accused is ongoing in the Penal Court of Goicoechea.
In Pérez Zeledón, a violent incident occurred late on March 10, 2025, resulting in the death of a man in his thirties who sustained multiple gunshot wounds in the Sagrada Familia area.
Emergency services confirmed his death at the scene.
So far this year,
Costa Rica has recorded approximately 180 homicides, with five occurring in Pérez Zeledón. The majority of these cases are attributed to disputes between rival groups, according to the Judicial Investigation Agency (OIJ).
In a separate criminal case, a man known as Mora Solano has been sentenced to 40 years in prison for the homicide of Thomas Fisher González, which took place in September 2017. Mora deceived Fisher and his brother into believing they were meeting for a barbecue before committing the violent act, which resulted in significant trauma to the victim.
The court's ruling was passed on March 6, 2025, affirming Mora’s culpability and underscoring serious concerns about violent crime in the region.
Additionally, Turrialba authorities have detained a traffic officer, Campos Quesada, under allegations of attempting to solicit sex from a minor in exchange for money, highlighting issues of abuse of authority.
Reports indicate that the officer approached the young individual under the pretense of a traffic violation but subsequently attempted to engage in immoral conduct.
An investigation is ongoing, and the prosecutor's office will request precautionary measures.
Lastly, a security camera recorded a severe traffic accident involving a motorcyclist who was killed when struck by a vehicle that subsequently fled the scene.
The investigation is actively seeking information on the driver, as notes about the vehicle involved have been documented.
The incident underscores persistent concerns over road safety and accountability in traffic-related incidents.
