For the first time, Teletica will broadcast the Good Friday processions from Cartago instead of San José.
On April 2, 2025, Teletica, a prominent Costa Rican television network, announced a significant change in its broadcast of the Good Friday processions, an event traditionally held and televised from San José.
This year, the network will transmit the religious activities from Cartago, marking the first time this specific location has hosted the broadcast.
Jazmín Rivera, a producer for Teletica, emphasized the importance of these broadcasts, stating, "For Televisora de
Costa Rica, it is a great honor to accompany the faith of hundreds of Costa Ricans through the processions.
We know there are many who would like to attend but cannot due to illness, incarceration, or other reasons, and through us, they can experience and feel part of this living tradition of faith."
Historically, the Good Friday events have been organized by the Metropolitan Cathedral in San José, but this year, the activities will center around the celebrations in the historic city of Cartago, known for its religious significance.
The announcement comes shortly after the Municipality of San José revealed a significant reduction in the funding allocated for organizing the Holy Week processions in the capital, which could potentially affect the quality and visibility of the traditional Catholic celebrations there.
Teletica has not clarified whether this municipal decision influenced its choice to relocate the broadcasts.
The processions from Cartago will be aired on April 18, 2025, at 10 a.m. and 6 p.m., featuring journalist Yessenia Alvarado and Capuchin friar Fray Benigno Varela as hosts.
Teletica's decision is expected to elicit extensive discussion among viewers as they prepare for this transition in a long-standing television tradition.
