The 60th Copa del Café sees champions from the U.S. and Germany as Costa Rican talent makes historic advances.
The 60th edition of the Copa del Café, a prestigious junior tennis tournament, was recently held at the
Costa Rica Country Club in Escazú.
The event provided a platform for young tennis players from around the globe to compete and gain exposure in a professional-like setting.
Local talents Julian Garnier and Lucia Gallegos represented
Costa Rica in the U-18 category.
In singles competition, Garnier faced Simon Caldwell from the United States in his opening match, which ended in a loss for Garnier with a score of 6-0, 6-0. Meanwhile, Lucia Gallegos faced American player Ligaya Murray in a closely contested match, ultimately losing with scores of 7-6, 6-4.
Gallegos, nevertheless, made significant strides in the doubles category.
She teamed up with Ireland O’Brien of the United States, and together they advanced to the semifinals after a series of victories, including triumphs over a team from Mexico and Venezuela.
Their journey concluded in the semifinals with a loss to Mariella Thamm from Germany and her partner Julieta Pareja.
Gallegos’ achievement marked a notable moment for
Costa Rica, as the last local player to reach the semifinals was Julia Roca in 2001.
The tournament concluded with Ryan Cozad from the U.S. claiming the men’s singles title, defeating fellow American Yubel Ubri 6-2, 6-3, while Mariella Thamm of Germany captured the women's title with her victory over American Ava Rodriguez with scores of 6-3, 6-3.
The Coffee Bowl, which featured 64 junior players, is a key milestone for aspiring professionals and has attracted notable players in the past, including Roger Federer, Madison Keys, Juan Martín del Potro, and Viktoria Azarenka.
The event is known for its competitive matches and large, enthusiastic crowds.
Luis Fernandez, president of the Organizing Committee, emphasized the tournament's role in supporting young talent by providing them with valuable exposure and experience akin to that of professional circuits.
The tournament was broadcasted in
