After a 17-year hiatus, the team secures a place in the tournament following a strong performance in the CONCACAF qualifiers.
Costa Rica's U-17 women's national football team has successfully qualified for the 2025 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco, marking a significant achievement after 17 years of absence from the event.
The team secured its spot following a commendable performance at the CONCACAF qualifiers held in Toluca, Mexico.
Finishing in second place in Group A with six points,
Costa Rica earned the qualification as one of the best runners-up.
Their last participation in a U-17 World Cup dates back to 2008 when they qualified for the tournament in New Zealand.
They also hosted the World Cup in 2014 but did not qualify for the international event since then.
The 2025 World Cup is scheduled to take place from October 17 to November 8, prompting the team to begin preparations for this key international competition.
During the CONCACAF qualifiers,
Costa Rica faced teams from Mexico, Haiti, and Bermuda.
The team made a notable entrance into the final round of qualifiers with an impressive 8-0 victory over Haiti on April 1, where player Lucía Paniagua scored twice.
However, they faced a setback on April 3 when they were defeated 4-0 by host nation Mexico, putting their World Cup qualification in jeopardy.
In a decisive comeback, the team rebounded on April 5 with a commanding 9-1 win against Bermuda.
In this match, Nubia Medina scored three goals, while Daniela Ocampo added two.
Players Lucía Paniagua, Tiara Ruiz, and Michelle Murillo each contributed with one goal, alongside an own goal from the opposing team.
These results culminated in accumulating six points and a goal difference of +12, ensuring their advancement to the World Cup in Morocco as the best second-placed team from the tournament.
