Tragedies and Losses: Recent Events Shake Communities in Latin America

Recent incidents in Mexico and Costa Rica highlight issues of safety, gender violence, and community impact.
ALEJANDRO DE LA PEÑA, a prominent Mexican actor known for his roles in action films, has passed away, confirmed by the Asociación Nacional de Intérpretes (ANDI).

His notable performances include titles such as _Predator_ (1987) and _Fragmentos del destino_ (2007).

The organization expressed its condolences to De la Peña’s family and friends, acknowledging his significant contributions to the film industry.

The cause of death has not been disclosed.

In another tragic event, the life of an influencer, HAILEY OKULA, was cut short following complications during childbirth.

Her husband reported the unexpected loss, sharing their struggles with infertility and their long-awaited joy in expecting their child.

Her passing has drawn expressions of sorrow and support from followers online.

In Mexico City, the AXE Ceremonia 2025 festival turned tragic when a metal structure collapsed due to high winds, resulting in the deaths of two photographers.

The structure fell during a performance by musician Meme del Real.

The city’s authorities have opened an investigation into the incident, citing concerns over safety measures not being met.

The festival was attended by thousands, and eyewitness accounts reported chaos following the incident.

In a separate incident, a young motorcyclist, identified as 25-year-old PERALTA SALAS, died after crashing his motorcycle into a tree in Pavas, San José, Costa Rica.

The crash occurred around 1 a.m., and despite emergency medical assistance, he succumbed to his injuries shortly after arrival at the hospital.

Witnesses indicated speed may have been a factor in the accident.

Meanwhile, in Tucurrique, Cartago, an accident involving a vehicle that rolled over into a gorge led to one fatality and multiple injuries.

Rescue operations required specialized equipment, and emergency responders confirmed that several of the injured individuals were transported to local hospitals.

In a violent incident, 32-year-old JUNIOR ALEXANDER WEST CALVO was shot and killed while sitting in his car in Guararí, Heredia.

Police reports indicate he died from gunshot wounds that struck his chest.

This represents a continuing trend of violence in the area, with Heredia recording an increase in homicides this year.

A tragic femicide occurred in Taras, Cartago, when 18-year-old AMALY RODRÍGUEZ MARTÍNEZ was shot.

Reports suggest that her boyfriend is the prime suspect after fleeing the scene.

The femicide highlights ongoing concerns over gender-based violence in Costa Rica, which has seen an alarming rise in such cases this year, reflecting broader societal issues.

Lastly, the body of 19-year-old MARCELA ALEXANDRA HERNÁNDEZ LÓPEZ, who had been missing since March, was discovered in Guanacaste.

The case has brought renewed attention to the issue of femicide in the region, with experts emphasizing the urgent need for preventative measures against violence toward women.
