Authorities investigate the fatal shooting as a femicidio, escalating concerns over gender-based violence in the country.
An eighteen-year-old woman, identified by the last names Rodríguez Martínez, died after being shot multiple times on the night of Saturday, October 21, 2023, in Taras, Cartago.
The shooting is being investigated as the fifteenth femicidio in
Costa Rica this year.
Emergency services were alerted at 9:49 PM by local residents who reported gunfire approximately 400 meters south of the former Claudio Zúñiga workshop.
Upon arriving at the scene, officials found five bullet casings.
The victim was urgently transported by taxi to Max Peralta Hospital, where she was pronounced dead upon arrival.
Notably, the taxi was driven by the victim's father, who reported that his daughter was at her boyfriend's house when she heard several gunshots.
Upon exiting the residence, she was found wounded on the ground.
A seventeen-year-old male, identified as the deceased’s boyfriend, was also present in the taxi.
Reports indicate that he was wearing a blue sweater and pants at the time and was carrying a revolver.
He fled the scene upon arriving at the hospital.
The case is currently under the jurisdiction of the Judicial Investigation Agency (Organismo de Investigación Judicial, OIJ), which is conducting a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
